Many people forget the aphorism: ” One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter.” This essay examines two terrorists and may help to explain a third terrorist.
Menachem Begin – was born on August 16, 1913, in Poland. During the 1940’s a number of Jewish Terrorist organizations existed in the Middle East. The Irgun Zvai Leumi and the Stern Gang were the two most infamous. Menachem Begin was the head of the Irgun. The Irgun murdered Arabs, British troops, and Jews. Jews were murdered by the Irgun if they were considered to be too friendly with either the Arabs or the British.
The Irgun bombed the King David Hotel on July 22, 1946, and murdered 91 people in this terrorist attack. On April 9, 1948, the Irgun, under the direction of Menachem Begin, joined forces with the Stern Gang and attacked an Arab Village called Deir Yassin. The Deir Yassin attack slaughtered 240 men, women, and children.
Menachem Begin was later elected by the citizens of Israel to their highest office of Prime Minister. Menachem Begin was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1978.
Yasser Arafat – was born on August 24, 1929, in Cairo. In the late 1950’s, Yasser Arafat co-founded Fatah, the movement for the National Liberation of Palestine. From 1965 to 1967, Fatah attacked Israeli villages. Israeli citizens were killed.
In July, 1968, Fatah joined the PLO and then became the dominant member of the PLO. In February, 1970, a PLO group called the PFLP bombed SwissAir flight # 330 and 47 people were killed. Yasser Arafat was also associated with the terrorist group known as Black September and another called the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade. In May, 1972, the PFLP dispatched members of the Japanese Red Army to attack Lod Airport in Tel Aviv killing 27 people.
Groups under Yasser Arafat’s direct or indirect control were responsible for bombings, killings, assassinations, and hijackings.
Yasser Arafat was later selected to become the leader of the Palestinian People. Yasser Arafat was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994.
The truly great tragedy was that these two terrorists served as terrorist “role models” for Osama bin Laden.
Osama bin Laden – was born in Saudi Arabia in 1957. Bin Laden studied economics at King Abdul Aziz University in Jedda, Saudi Arabia.
When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979, bin Laden became a major part of the Afghan resistance. The U.S. Government was a major supporter of the Afghan resistance, or mujahideen .The Afghan resistance set up Islamic Schools in Pakistan for Afghan refugees. These schools eventually became training centers for Islamic terrorists. ( Please read on this website how the U.S. Government and the CIA have attempted to rewrite history. Please refer to Charlie Wilson’s War.)
Osama bin Laden launched the terrorist attacks against the U.S. on September 11, 2001.
Inside the CIA, there exists a psychological evaluation unit that attempts to analyze and predict the behavior of world leaders and terrorists and others of importance. Of course, Osama bin Laden is of great interest to this unit. Just in case you geniuses have not figured it all out, please allow me to help you.
Osama bin Laden’s psychotic reasoning probably went like this: Begin was a murder and a terrorist. Later he became the leader of Israel and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Arafat was a murder and a terrorist. Later he became the leader of the Palestinian People and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Therefore, if Osama bin Laden is a great terrorist, he too shall be a great leader and receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
