A Wise Saying – Part 31

Jonathan Swift wrote his own epitaph which is as follows:  ” Hic depositum est Corpus; JONATHAN SWIFT;  Hujus Ecclesiae Cathedralis; Decdani; Ubi saeva Indignatio; Ulterius; Cor lacerare nequit; Abi Viator;  Et imitare, si poteris; Strenuum pro virili; Libertatis Vindicatorem.

A close translation may read: ” Here is laid the body of Jonathan Swift, Doctor of Sacred Theology, Dean of this cathedral church, where fierce Indignation can no longer injure the heart.  Go forward and copy, if you can, this vigorous champion of Liberty. ”
